Conversational German, Listening, and Online Lessons
Learning conversational German requires a great deal of listening for accurate speech patterns and sounds. There are several sounds in German, as well as other languages, that are not used in English. Therefore, it’s essential that you are able to hear the sounds in their most appropriate use.
When you learn a new language with new sounds you often have to learn how to use your mouth muscles and tongue in a manner that initially feels unnatural in order to attain the appropriate sounds. Because some of us have a hard time developing these new mouth movements and muscle conditions, we often substitute the sound with what is known as a transitional sound. A transitional sound is sort of like a blend between the appropriate oral sound and one that sounds more like a familiar English sound.
Because we all need to practice the new sounds you can easily develop a transitional sound if you aren’t hearing the sound as it’s meant to be used. Transitional sounds are often easier for English speakers to use because they feel more natural. However, if you’re regularly hearing conversational German used in the right way, you are quite likely to find that any transitional sounds that you use don’t sound correct to your own ears.
Online lessons can be great for learning these sounds provided that there is an emphasis on making the appropriate sounds for the proper words. If you can’t hear the language spoken, even if it’s just one word at a time, you’re going to struggle harder to get the right fluctuations in your vocal patterns.
In order to really master conversational German you’re going to have to listen and practice on a regular basis. It’s often best to practice the words at the time. The ability to repeat words on the spot helps your brain register the new sound and oral manipulations that will help you master the language. The more often you hear these new sounds the more you will be able to develop the correct audible response.
