Is it Even Possible to Teach Yourself Spanish?

teach yourself spanish - flag imageI know there are several ways to teach yourself Spanish, and that some come a bit more highly recommended than others. Growing up in a city where cultures merged, it was impossible for me not to pick up on the language. However, just like any other absorption method of learning I ended up mixing dialects and making the occasional pronunciation error. And please, don’t ask me to conjugate a verb!

Since I had a firm base but with obvious need for transcending what I thought I knew it made sense to take a crack at Spanish as though I knew nothing. Sometimes believing we already know something can limit us from realizing that we don’t.

I didn’t feel that sitting in a class parroting information was going to give me the opportunity to relearn anything I may have poorly learned during my absorption period. Besides, those classroom settings are pretty pricey where I live. As much as I might enjoy the random game to keep things interesting, I felt I needed a more comprehensive overview of the language to really see where I stood.

I also didn’t want to invest six or seven years of my life into learning a language. Even without a base knowledge, I tend to feel like those long term lessons that most of us endured during high school are so limited in their practical applications that you don’t always retain the first lesson by the time you’re on the tenth lesson. If you teach yourself Spanish, then you have the opportunity to make sure that you’re retaining the necessary information in a manner that suits you.

I went with an online course for the convenience (I am a rather busy individual) and I chose an audio based course because I figured if you’re going to teach yourself Spanish, it makes sense to hear, see, and the apply what you’re learning. I like the idea of having a computer be my teacher because I can manipulate the lesson as I need to and there isn’t anyone to correct me for slouching or demand that I take notes that I never found to be all that helpful.
