Your Language Queries: Asl Browser

George asks…
sign language profanity – asl?
we are totally confused about the “ok” sign. One site says the word for “excellent” is the open “f” hand… http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm
But we keep hearing about this being a swear word, the “a” word or worse.
Some please expalain in details about what is the sign for excellent or at least is this sign different or a curse word.

Clive answers:
Ok I got the web site
they are doing excellent correctly
if you are being told that it is a curse word or ‘a” word, someone is either joking with you or it is a local dialect thing started in a local area likely due to some well remembered conversation in an open group that got carried along
sign language is a universal language but just like English has changes according to where you are
for instance common words in America can be extremely racy statements in New Zealand or Australia
and words i America can mean something very different in England
