Mark asks…

Do you know/recommend any German language school in Stuttgart or Koeln?

I would like to go to live in Germany for a year, and I thought of studying the language along. Do you know or recommend any language school or any state run college; and how much does it cost; did you find a part time job and a cheap room too?

Clive answers:

Hi, I lived in Stuttgart for 12 months, a fantastic city. I didn’t speak any German when I arrived. I went to a Sprechen Schule, language school, which was called lingua viva. It was 360 euro for a 3 month course which was 3 hours per week. But there are intensive courses where you can go for 8 hours a day, but obviously these are more expensive. However there are many language schools.

I found it easiest to learn by spending time with German people and watching German TV. It is very frustrating at first, but you do pick a lot up. You definitely need to go to school though to learn the grammer. If you are a native English speaker with no other language behind you, you Will find the grammer very confusing.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time in Germany. It is a fantastic country and does not deserve the stereotype that it has amongst British people.
