Joseph asks…
Hindi Language question?
Well in my spare time i’ve been trying to learn hindi over the internet. Well one thing has confused me. In this site, http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Hindi_Lessons/Lesson_0
it says the letter ? sounds like the “A” in father.
But this site, http://www.bharatdarshan.co.nz/hinditeacher/hinditeacher2.htm
says that letter sounds like the “A” in about and that a different letter sounds like that “a” in father.
So which site is telling the truth, i don’t want to waste my time learning wrong information

Clive answers:
The second site is a bit confusing, although not completely wrong.
? By itself is the sound of a in about (uh).
? By itself is the sound of a in argue (ah).
E.g.
??? = agar (uh-guh-r) meaning “if”
???? = Agra (ah-guh-rah) – name of a city
The uh vowel sound of ? Comes built-in by default with every consonant, if a different vowel is not used, e.g., in the above example ? = guh
? Is the ah vowel sound that comes from ?, e.g., ?? = rah in the above examples.
