Your Language Queries: Korean Language History

languages

Linda asks…

What are some examples in history of governments trying to stamp out certain languages?

ex. Japan tried to eliminate the Korean language during its invasion of the country.

What are some other examples of this happening?

Clive answers:

Welsh was forbidden in schools in the UK in the early 20th century. If a child spoke Welsh, they had to wear what was called a cribban (a piece of wood on a leather strap) until another child spoke Welsh, at which point they would pass it on. At the end of the day, the child wearing the cribban was beaten.
